"Saturday afternoon 1971 before most of your customers were born.. LOL Lunch was Skippy peanut butter, Strawberry preserves, Clausen dill pickle, and a bottle of TAB... It is a wonder that I don't have any stomach issues. Oh yeah that was all eaten while watching Fat Albert on channel 2 with snow on the screen of the TV. Black and white I might add."

NATIONAL PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY DAY – April 2
National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day is celebrated annually on April 2nd.. This food holiday is a classic favorite of many. The average American will have eaten over 2000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches by the time they graduate from high school.
Peanut butter was considered a delicacy in the early 1900′s and was only served in New York City’s finest tea rooms. In a May 1896 article published in the Good Housekeeping magazine, a recipe “urged homemakers to use a meat grinder to make peanut butter and spread the result on bread”. That same year, in June, the culinary magazine Table Talk, published a “peanut butter sandwich recipe”.
It is thought to be that the first reference of peanut butter paired with jelly on bread, to be published in the United States, was by Julia Davis Chandler in 1901. In the late 1920′s the price of peanut butter declined and the sandwich became very popular with children.
According to the Peanut Board, during World War II, both peanut butter and jelly were part of the United States soldiers military ration list.
In 1998, The J.M. Smucker Co. introduced Goober, a jarred product which combined alternating vertical stripes of peanut butter and jelly.

Fried PB&J Crunch Sandwiches
WARNING: This amazing twist on a PB and J may prove to be highly addictive.
Ingredients

1 cup chunky peanut butter

Eight 1-inch-thick slices Pullman bread

1 cup good raspberry preserves
-
2 bananas, sliced thin on the bias

2 cups plain potato chips with ridges

3 large eggs, beaten
-
2 cups cinnamon square cereal, crushed by hand in a plastic bag

8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter
Directions
Spread the peanut butter on 4 slices of bread and the raspberry preserves on the other 4 slices. Add the bananas and a nice pile of chips on top of the peanut butter slices; sandwich with the raspberry preserve slices.
Place the eggs and cereal in separate shallow bowls. Heat a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-low heat and melt 2 tablespoons of the butter. Dip a sandwich in the eggs, then the cinnamon cereal, pressing down to make sure the cereal adheres to both sides. Repeat with the other sandwiches.
In batches, fry the sandwiches low and slow until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes per side, adding more butter to the pan as needed. Cut the sandwiches in half on the diagonal and serve.
